ABA Therapy

Modify behavior while teaching functional skills.

ABA

What is ABA?

ABA is the most effective evidence-based treatment for Autism. ABA works by modifying and decreasing unwanted behavior while increasing desired behavior. ABA is also a system of teaching functional skills, by using reinforcement, shaping, and other methods to achieve mastery of target goals.

ABA is based on the principles of behavior of Dr. B. F. Skinner in the 1960’s. ABA was later used by Dr. Lovaas in a groundbreaking study on autism in 1973, and then further developed in 1987. Results from these studies demonstrated that intense treatment with ABA greatly improved the functionality of children with autism. In 1999 the US Office of the Surgeon General endorsed ABA as a treatment for Autism. Currently, 64% of children with Autism use ABA therapy. According to studies 89% of children treated with ABA show positive results.

Our Approach to ABA

At ATS we offer a unique approach to ABA. The easiest way to define it is fun. We believe if the child is not enjoying what they are doing they will likely not learn effectively. Of course, the therapy is not easy, and it takes place over many hours, and of course there will be difficult moments, but the key for us at ATS is to see the child as happy. When the child is able to overcome a difficult puzzle, or when a child says their first words, it might have taken hours of work, but in the end, they are thrilled!

Our litmus test is to see the child excited to come to therapy, and to not be excited to leave therapy. That is what we most typically see with our kidos! And that is why we love what we do!
